What is Pet First Aid?
Pet First Aid is the immediate and temporary care given to an injured animal until it can be taken to a professional veterinarian for more definitive medical care and attention.
A primary goal of Pet First Aid is to protect both yourself and your pet from further harm or injury.
Pet First Aid is an American Red Cross course which offers video segments with discussion reinforcing that information along with hands-on training for CPR and first aid skills.
Pet owners will be able to:
- Recognize an emergency
- Recognize vital signs for a pet
- Identify signals of choking
- Provide rescue breathing
- Perform CPR
- Identify signals of sudden illness
- Move an injured pet
- Identify “pet friendly” first aid kit items
About the Instructor
I am Susan Allen, co-owner of Pets and Friends, LLC along with my husband Gene and my mother, Sue Ann Richardson. Pets and Friends is a full-line pet supplies store and pet funeral home and crematory. Our facility opened in June 2006.
My background includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a Texas teaching certificate. For many years, I served as a volunteer first, then as an employee of the Smith County Chapter, American Red Cross.
For the past several years, I have been directly involved in the sales and service of pet merchandise.
As the only certified Pet First Aid instructor in East Texas, I realize how much a course of this nature is needed in our area. Because of this, I teach each course in a professional, but down to earth manner. All class participants are encouraged to share their experiences as pet owners.

2009 Course Schedule
Pet First Aid is designed for pet owners as well as professional pet groomers, sitters, trainers and boarders. This all-inclusive 4- hour course offers a dog and cat first aid books (with DVDs), hands-on training and course certification for only $44.
As a pet owner of our beloved pets, Buddy, Ziggy and Andy, it gives me great satisfaction to share the Pet First Aid course with you.
